COVID-19 Paid Sick and Safe Time for Seattle Couriers

Hello {% assign name = {{${first_name}}} | split: ' ' %} {{name[0] | default: "there"}},

Beginning July 13th, 2020, “Paid Sick and Paid Safe Time” (PSST) became available for Couriers working in Seattle. This program adds to the resources available for Couriers during the pandemic, which include discounted urgent care and therapy visits and COVID-19 Financial Assistance.

Through this program, active Couriers who have completed deliveries that start or end in Seattle within the last 90 days may submit claims for financial support through “PSST” to assist with:

  • Illness or medical care, for yourself or your family members
  • Caviar operations are suspended or discontinued for health or safety reasons
  • School or childcare facility closures
  • Escape from situations of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking

What this Means for You

At the beginning of this program, you have accrued {{custom_attribute.${psst_accum_days}}} of PSST from October 1, 2019 through July 31, 2020. You will continue to accrue one additional day of PSST for every 30 days that you work in Seattle (i.e., complete at least one delivery that starts or ends in Seattle).

Your current average daily compensation rate is {{custom_attribute.${psst_avg_daily_comp}}}. This is the amount that would be paid to you if you use a day of PSST, and it is based on the average daily compensation you received in your highest earning month since October 1, 2019. Your average daily compensation rate will either stay the same, or increase if you have a higher earning month in the future.

Notice of Rights

  • You have a right to PSST under the terms of Seattle’s ordinance.
  • You will receive a monthly email notifying you of the number of accrued days of PSST that you have available, as well as your average daily compensation rate.
  • You can only use PSST in 24-hour increments; you cannot use a portion/fraction of a day of PSST. If you work on a day that you claimed PSST, Caviar may reject or rescind any PSST payments for that day.
  • Please note that you may only “carry over” up to 9 days of PSST into the new calendar year.
  • PSST is only available until 180 days after the COVID-19 public emergency ends in Seattle.
  • You have a right to be protected from retaliation for exercising in good faith the rights protected by the ordinance, including the use of accrued PSST.
  • You have a right to file a complaint with the Office of Labor Standards or bring a civil action for violation of the requirements of the ordinance.
